To
see prizes for the "Weigh to Go" Contest
To see items for the ONLINE
Auction (Starts April 28- 8 p.m.- and ends two weeks later)
While the primary burden for this trip
must be assumed by the parents of the students
involved, we will provide performance-based opportunities for
students to raise money to lower their trips costs.
Fund-raising
plans included:
1. TOUR
CD - “Beijing, My Kind Of Town”
The CDs have
arrived and are currently being sold by students for $15 each. For each CD sold, $10 will go toward the individual travelers tour
fund, and $5 will be used by the Tour Fund to pay for CD production. The cost is $15 for
everyone and no one is allowed to sell the CD for any amount less
than $15. One student plans to write friends and family and offer
the CD to them as a special gift of appreciation if they donate a
minimum of $25 toward the student's trip cost. (A rather clever
and allowable idea.) A postcard to order free
tickets to the China Tour Preview Concert on May 12,
2000, was attached to each CD. Those concert tickets available through the mail will be honored until
7:15 p.m., after which all seats will be available for free to the
public.
GARRET ASH HAS ALREADY SOLD 40 TOUR CDs, lowering his
trip cost by $400 and lowering EVERY STUDENT'S trip cost by more
than $2. If everyone works this hard, it adds up, and we will fly for FREE!!!
2. WEIGH TO
GO CONTEST
- By donating a minimum
of $2 and using a special entry form that has been provided to
our students, people entered this contest to guess the "gross" weight of all musicians
with their instruments in
cases, and the average weight per person. There were two
chances to win...one winner was the one who guessed the closest to the actual weight without going
over, and another winner can guess the average weight per
person. All money turned in by the student
travelers using a special envelope for that purpose went into their individual tour account. The
total weight was known only by Mr. Warrick and the amount was locked in the school safe.
The envelope was opened on stage at the
May 12, 2000, concert by the Jazz Ensemble and Chamber
Orchestra. Certain instruments/cases will not be considered in the total weight. (String basses, timpani, all drums and sound equipment.)
Student travelers are not
eligible to win the contest.
3. ONLINE
AUCTION - Beginning at the Spring Jazz Concert on Friday, April
28, and ending two weeks later at 8:00 PM (CDT) on Saturday, May
13,
we conducted an ONLINE AUCTION of some very substantial items.
The auction was held at http://pricestop.com/auctions/ntjazz.
4. CHICK
COREA/ GARY BURTON DUET BENEFIT CONCERT- (April 29,
2000)- Reserved seat tickets were $25. Coupons printed in the
Pioneer Press, the cosponsor of this concert were for $20 tickets. All funds received
were directed into the Tour account.
Since these are major jazz artists, jazz students who are not in
Jazz Ensemble I will be sold balcony tickets for $10
each. Since the Jazz Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra will be
performing on that concert, those students do not need to purchase
tickets.
SPECIAL
NOTE TO TOUR FAMILIES REGARDING TICKETS TO COREA/BURTON CONCERT...
Every tour
family that sells a ticket to Corea/Burton can buy a ticket for
$10 (rather than $20 or $25) to a maximum of two reduced price
tickets per family. (Families would have to sell two tickets to
get the two reduced price tickets.) It should be noted that the
Corea/Burton concert had all profit after expenses directed
to the tour fund to reduce everyone's cost. While several of the other
fund raisers allow the student to benefit as much as 100% on what
they sell, this will not. Since the Corea/Burton concert is cosponsored by the
Pioneer Press and they will be printing ticket coupons, it will be
much easier to just deposit all the profits into the tour fund.
Members of the Chamber Orchestra and Jazz
Ensemble will be admitted free to the concert.
5. FORTUNE
COOKIES - These will be sold at Jazz and Chamber Orchestra concerts, and at school for .25 cents each. Since individual accounting will be difficult for this project, all funds from the sale will go to the Tour
Fund to reduce everyone's cost.
6.
While the combined TOUR PREVIEW CONCERT planned for May 12, 2000, by the Jazz Ensemble and
Chamber Orchestra was free, we may "pass the hat"
for donations. At that concert the total weight for
the Weigh To Go Contest was announced. Postcards
to obtain the 800 free
tickets to the concert were attached to Tour CDs. Those tickets available through the mail
were honored until 7:15 p.m., after which all seats will be
available for free to the public.
7. SPRING JAZZ CONCERT (April 14,
2000). General admission tickets were $5 each. Tour participants who
sold tickets using a special envelope provided will
receive $4 credited toward their personal tour account, and $1 applied to the Tour Fund.
Since the ticket cost of this concert is already so cheap, there will be
no reduction in price for tour families.
8. SPRING ORCHESTRA CONCERT (April 28, 2000). General admission tickets
were $5 each. Tour participants who sold tickets using a special envelope provided
received $4 credited toward their personal tour account, and $1 applied to the Tour Fund.
Since the ticket cost of this concert was already so cheap, there
is no reduction in price for tour families.
A FORMER PROJECT.... STRAUSS WALTZ/BIG BAND DANCE - After careful
consideration, we have decided that this fund raiser would not be
the best use of our time to plan, and that the available locations
were not satisfactory to guarantee a successful event.
